TIPS for Your Engagement Session

January 31, 2018

Engagement sessions are a great way to have fun and get to know your photographer for the wedding day!!  I include engagement sessions in The Wedding Experience because I truly believe that they are a VITAL part of the entire process. During your engagement session, you’ll have the chance to get to know your photographer and experience how they shoot. This session will make a HUGE impact on how the wedding day flows because your photographer will know how you two interact, what your best poses are and how to photograph you in a genuine way!

Here are a few things to consider when planning your engagement session:

TIME OF YEAR

This is one of the most important things to consider first.  Will your photos be used on your website, save the date, and/or at the wedding?  If you need the photos for your Save the Date - booking an engagement session early is important.

Also, if your wedding is in the Spring, you may want to consider a Fall engagement session.  Since most of your wedding portraits will have green and flower backgrounds, a Fall engagement provides a completely different look with fiery reds, yellows, and deeper colors.

LOCATION

As you start to plan for your engagement shoot, you will need to start brainstorming about location ideas. I LOVE it when couples pick a location that is special or sentimental to them in some way! Farms, campuses, downtown alleys and even laundry mats are great locations that tell your love story! I’m serious! Do not shy away from crazy ideas! The more creative, the better!

OUTFIT

The DLP Engagement sessions are typically about 1.5-2 hours, which provides two clothing options and locations.  Most often, couples like to have one casual, everyday outfit and then one outfit that is dressier! This will give your shoot two totally different “looks”. I recommend beginning with the dressy outfit first!

Here are a few clothing tips:

Don’t try to MATCH...try to pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. If everyone wore the same exact color at their e-shoot, how boring would those images be?

Don’t be afraid to be BOLD! Accessorize and make your outfits your own with scarves, bold necklaces and fun shoes!

MOST PATTERNS are actually ok.... however, graphics are not favorable for portraits. If you’re wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting.

COMFORT is Key!!

Lay your clothes out on the bed and snap a picture.  If you like what you see, you are set!!

HAIR & MAKEUP

Schedule your hair and makeup trial on the day of the engagement session.  This is one less thing to worry about!!

RING

Clean your ring, as it is a big part of your engagement session.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, RELAX!!

You don’t have to be a pro! Your photographer will I help you along the way and it’s going to be a blast! Enjoy this time together, and make a date out of it!
